* ‘New film breaks the silence on the Roma Holocaust’

Roma journalist Orhan Galjus and filmmaker Bob Entrop made a film titled Broken Silence about the scattered memories of the few Roma survivors and raised awareness regarding the injustices that Roma people went through.

The fil was screened at the headquarter of Amnesty International in Soreditch London. The film portrays an emotional journey through Kosovo, Germany and Poland in the search of testimonies, signs of the Roma holocaust and conversations with the youth.

The images of Auschwitz, survivor’s stories, the gravesites shown in the screening raised a lot of questions about the critical situation of most Roma people and contributed to foster a memorable atmosphere where the personal and the collective interwine.

WARSAW - Ingibjörg Sólrún Gísladóttir, Director of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), praised efforts by countries in the OSCE region to promote greater awareness and recognition of the genocide against the Roma and Sinti people during the Second World War, including increased attention to educating youth about this horrible crime at the hands of the Nazi regime.

* ‘Council of Europe honors victims of Roma Holocaust’

The year 2017 marked the 73rd anniversary of 2 August 1944 and 3,000 Roma were exterminated in the gas chambers on that day.

The Council of Europe held a commemorative wreath-laying ceremony in Strasbourg to honor the Roma victims of the Holocaust. Mr. Thorsten Afflerback (Head of the Support team to the Special representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe for Roma issues), Emil Ruffer (Ambassador, Representative of the Czech Republic and Miranda Vuolastranta (President of the European Roma and Travelllers Forum – ERTF) spoke at the ceremony about the importance of both recalling on justice but also how it is crucial to improve the rights of Roma.

* European Commission honours Roma Holocaust Memorial Day
